Churros and Me!

Those of who have read my blog http://psycho-blogical.blogspot.com/2019/07/spain-spanish-and-spaniards.html know that I am a big fan of everything Spanish.

Today, I was missing my Spain trip a bit too much. So I decided to bring a little bit of Spain into my home.
I took it upon myself to make Churros. For those who don't know, Churros are traditional Spanish snacks that look something like this and are mostly eaten with hot Chocolate Sauce. And trust me, they are D-E-L-I-C-I-O-U.S.

Now I feel there is something mysterious between Churros and Me.

Every time I have eaten Churros, a story worth telling has unfolded.

Let me take you back to the first time I ate Churros. We were in Spain at the time, for a 3-week trip. We had a 'Free Day' that day, meaning we had no fixed plans. We were free to do whatever we wanted to, go wherever we wanted and explore places on our own. We were instructed to come back at an allocated point at a particular time. As per plan, every one gathered and off we went to try Churros for the first time in our lives. I was walking along with two other girls in my group. We were all so excited and were deep in conversation about how our day went, what all we did, what we saw, how many pictures we clicked, bla bla bla. You know us girls! All of a sudden, we registered that the rest of our group was nowhere in sight!
Undeniably we panicked for a bit. It was our first experience of getting lost in a foreign land, after all.
Fortunately for us, I had bought a sim for my phone that very day and could contact one of our group members and ask about their whereabouts. Turns out, we had missed a turn and walked about a mile in the wrong direction.
Looking at the brighter side, we spent some extra calories before we gorged on some finger-licking good Churros.

The next time I ate Churros, I was again in Spain. Me and my friends were in Salamanca for the weekend. After exploring the beautiful city, we decided to experience some authentic food culture. The weather was really good, so we opted for a small restaurant with outdoor seating. Since we were determined to taste all possible Spanish dishes and since there was only one weekend of our voyage left, each of us ordered a separate dish. Now this was a mistake because we had been munching on finger food pretty much the entire time. By the time we were done with our meal, we were so full that we could not move. When we could eventually get up from our seats, we started our journey back to the bus station and onto our next destination.
When we were practically in the middle of nowhere, with no shops around, one of my fellow traveler needed to use the restroom urgently. After walking awhile, we finally spotted a small eatery. We asked one of the staff there if we could use the bathroom, to which he replied that the bathroom was for customers only.
We had no choice but to buy something. Churros (without the hot chocolate) was the only cheap item on the menu. So that was our obvious choice. But our overly-filled bellies just could not take anymore and we had to throw half of it away  :( It was one of the hardest things we had to do!

My third amusing experience with Churros was yet again in Spain. We were doing a small 2-week Spanish course in Valladolid. On the last day of the course, our professor decided to take us out and treat us to Churros. We gladly accepted. We had a gala time until when we were finished, we realized that it was not a treat after all; and we had to pay a sum that seemed pretty daunting in Euros. Our faces were all worth looking at! The fact is that we were mostly all students and had a budget to go by. So we were not at all in a position to treat ourselves to high-priced Churros.
This incident, however, became a material for jokes for the rest of our tour and I will never forget it, nor the overpriced Churros- that were actually pretty delicious.

Owing to the fact that I like Churros so much, I was delighted when I heard that a Churrería (a shop where they make and sell Churros) had opened up in my hometown. Wishing that my friends and family, too, should savor this deliciousness, I took them to the place they claimed to be Churrería. I mean, do you even it call it Churreria if their Churros are not even close to what Churros taste and feel like?
So my fourth experience with Churros was not a very positive one.

To keep up with the trend, making of Churros at home today had to be pretty eventful too.

Firstly, I made so much batter that I was frying Churros all evening.

Secondly, there might have been some water left in the piping bag after I washed it. So the first batch of Churros gave me some first degree burns.

Lastly, when I was almost done with it, the nozzle of the piping bag came out and off it went shooting right into the frying pan, creating a hot mess, literally, in the kitchen.

So you can imagine what an event it was, making Churros at home.

But, at the end of all this drama, I am quite proud of how they actually turned out.

Take a look at this picture.

What do you think of it?
Do you also like Churros as much I do?

    1. Hahaha! One recipe for Churros coming right up!
It doesn't have a dominating taste of it's own, altough it is slightly sweet. The sugar-cinnamon powder and/or hot chocolate sauce is therefore necessary.

Quarantine Thoughts : The Help

Hello there,  Today I am going to blog about a topic that occurred to me because of something that our maid did.  Those of who know me well, know that I bake. A lot. And I baked a cake today too. But the reason for today's baking session was a little bit different than usual. Today I baked for our maid's son's birthday :) She has been working at our house for years now and has seen me bake numerous times. Yesterday, she asked me whether I would bake a cake for her son's birthday.  This simple request of hers turned into a long chain of thoughts in my mind. I suddenly realized that we have been pretty lucky when it comes to having 'Help at Home.' We have had two maids till now, that have impacted my life.  The first one started working with us ever since ; or in fact even before my birth. Since both my parents were working, she used to care for me. As such, she was family. Later, due to her knee-problem, she was unable to continue work. But even after that, she a
